Canberra's Muslim community yesterday marked the start of Ramadan, a period of fasting, altruism and prayer.
Islamic Society of ACT vice-president Yusuf Mansuri said able-bodied Muslims would abstain from all food, drinks and sexual relations from sunrise to sunset over the next month, hoping to gain piety and self-restraint.
