Omid Safi, a professor of Islamic Studies at the University of North Carolina, told NPR recently that American troops burning the Quran was to Muslims like burning "the very person of Christ" would be to Christians. While it is an acceptable practice to burn a Quran that is torn or in disrepair, Safi explained that Islamics do so in an observed reverent and sacred manner.3/15/2012
