Fears of extremism in Syria mount

Despite unified and decisive Western insistence that Syrian president Bashar Assad must step down, Western states fear that the fall of what they call his “dictatorship” will lead Syria into a cycle of chaos, confusion and instability. It is in this cycle that they worry groups within the opposition will clash, allowing Salafists and violent Islamist organizations to take over Syria in a way that might be considered democratic.
