In metro Detroit, the Muslim leader who envisioned the Ground Zero mosque said that Islam is compatible with the U.S. And he said that the U.S. government's support of Islamic extremists in the 1980s helped create the problem of Al-Qaeda.
"Islamic values and American values are very much in sync," Imam Feisal Rauf said in an interview with the Free Press. "There is a need for Muslims to develop an American Islam that makes our faith natural to this country.
