[KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is not behind the recent operation by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) on the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC), party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
“It is a baseless and illogical allegation by the opposition.
“How can Umno order Jais when it comes under the state?” he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting here yesterday.
He was asked to comment on claims by the opposition that Umno had a hand in ordering Jais to perform an operation on the DUMC on Aug 3.
Najib stressed that the DUMC controversy did not involve the Federal Government but came under the purview of the state.]
[“Islam is the official federal religion that cannot be disputed.
“There should be no attempt to convert a Muslim or to cause a Muslim to sway from the Islamic faith,” he said.
However, he said, Umno also upholds the principles of the constitution that those of other faiths are free to practise their religion.]
